well the main reason is “i’m gay and i don’t like it” but here’s some other reasons i put forth to my mom
- do you call your male friends your “boyfriends” then?
- are you dating this person? no? stop calling them that.
- it’s bad enough that people don’t believe i can be happy and “fulfilled” in a relationship with a woman but you delegitimizing the word “girlfriend” by using it in relation to your friends means people question and confuse my actual real relationship with friendship
- “girlfriend” and “boyfriend” have romantic connotations and they always have
- “friend” is faster to say and causes less confusion
